Overview Art Collections allows users to browse art, photographs, antiques and other content from a well-known museum in the United States. The free app provides access to more than 25,000 pieces and was built specifically built for the iPad.   Art Collections also allows you to share favorite artwork with friends on Facebook, Twitter, Instapaper and more.   The app is also of the first iPad apps that makes use of public data approved by The Creative Commons.

The idea for Collections came about while visiting various musuems in Southern California.  The locations provided a wonderful educational experience, but these sites are massive and cannot be seen in their entirety in a single visit.  I started to think about how the public could experience the richness of the art if they didn't have the time or means for an extended visit. The iPad had just been announced so it made great sense to explore a solution using that technology.  The plan was to create a learning tool that could be used in a classroom, on the go, or at home.  Ideally folks will use the app as an electronic picture book.   They can search on keywords, then browse, zoom, and study the results.    With thousands of downloads since it's launch a few weeks ago, my goal is that Collections will inpsire other museums and educational insiutions to design and implement other useful tablet based applications for education and learning.
