I originally wrote this application last year as a way to showcase my skills but also to help improve understanding of the flu and geographic spread of viruses.  I am very excited to submit the 2.0 version of the app which I have completely re-designed for this contest. The app has five primary screens:

  1. The main screen is a dashboard view of the current flu activity report generated by the CDC Weekly Flu report (FluView) for the person's current location (by region or state and device's GPS location).  It gives the user a simple and easy to read status that they can check quickly when launching the app.  Data is sourced from http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/flureport.xml. Data is synchronized with the CDC on a weekly basis when data is updated by the CDC.
  2. Regions, shows the FluView map for the entire country as users have expressed an interest in seeing reports from other states and regions.
  3. Tips, educates the user about the 3 actions they can take to fight the flu (vaccination, spread prevention, antiviral drugs)
  4. The Flu Shot screen integrates with the Google Flu Vaccine Finder (http://www.google.org/flushot) app in order to locate flu vaccination centers closest to the user's existing location (location is determined from phone GPS data). Unfortunately Google has turned this feature off until the 2011/2012 season, so this feature will not be fully active again until Google re-activates the Vaccine Finder app.  The feature was thoroughly tested and worked during the 2010/2011 flu season.
  5.  Podcast news, reads the CDC RSS feed (http://www2c.cdc.gov/podcasts/searchandcreaterss.asp?topic=flu) and allows users to play the various podcasts from a practical user interface. I have plans to port this app to iPhone and future popular devices.  I am also looking to add more features as new data feeds become available from CDC and other agencies. Thank-you for considering my entry.
