We were basically looking for a simple project, me to work on learning Rails and Alex to work on UI design and JavaScript dev. It was our first hackathon, so we weren't planning on being particularly competitive; just felt like making an entertaining (albeit silly) project.
The basic idea is that after signing up for an account, you add your friend's phone numbers to your account, and every hour, they'll receive a text with a random fact about a cat. It originally spawned from an internet joke, but we decided to implement it as an actual app, which turned out to be a pretty good way to practice dev: general rails backend, TDD, Twilio API, decent UI, etc.
