Diana, the founder of 100Reporters, a nonprofit investigative news platform, faces the problem of assessing the impact of investigative projects with limited budget and resources.

Superficial metrics like "number of retweets" or "number of comments" are not enough: As Dick Tofel of ProPublica argues in his white paper, "Non Profit Journalism - Issues Around Impact," the impact of investigative journalism cannot be measured by reach or engagement alone. What ultimately matters is the change in the "real world": How does the investigation influence behavior, policies, practices or legislation. Does it lead to government investigation, firings or arrests?

Open Ripple measures this impact by using both existing tools and new methods from natural language processing. It combines all the results in a dashboard that is easy to read both for journalists, their funders and the public.
