The Frozen Horror HD is an interactive comic designed for the Apple iPad to teach readers about influenza through story telling, embedded interactive activities, an essay, and a radio documentary. The Frozen Horror comic tells the story of a scientist's study to find the source of a mysterious illness that nearly wiped out a village in 1918 and one survivors warning that some mysteries are best left unsolved.  Readers are drawn into a world where the study of influenza sheds light on a seemingly supernatural mystery and are able to explore the scientific concepts that are described in the story in several interactive activities.  The activities include:  an interactive flu strain map allowing the reader to visualize several properties of the various isolated strains of influenza;  a matching activity that asks the reader to help sort out several influenza trees in order to understand how the flu virus can evolve in host organisms;  and, an interactive image of the influenza virus for readers to look inside the virus and learn about its different internal structures that.  Accessible from a single table of contents, or embedded throughout the story, the interactive elements allow the reader to step outside the story to explore key concepts to learn more about the influenza virus.  In addition to interactive elements, the comic app also includes: a radio podcast called World of Viruses - Flu Pandemic, that readers can listen to while the read the comic or browse the activities; an essay called Waking the Dead, that follows the story from the comic to provide the reader more detailed scientific information;  and, a narrated auto track for the comic to enhance the reading experience and pull the reader into the story. Each of these elements come together in The Frozen Horror HD to provide an in-depth, richly interactive learning experience for students to discover the influenza virus in a World of Viruses.
