CAVEs (cave automatic virtual environments; UIC CAVE shown above/below) are used by scientist to gain extra dimension perspective when analyzing complex data such as protein structures. Unfortunately, these environments are prohibitively expensive (on the order of several hundred thousand dollars).
We seek to provide a similar environment for much less. Using PyMOL (free), Leap Motion ($70), and Oculus Rift ($350) in concert with their respective Python APIs, we have assembled a tool for molecular analysis and manipulation in 3-D. Through our code, one can analyze a PDB in PyMOL with 3-D visualization and camera control via the Oculus Rift and molecule translation via the Leap Motion.
