Illegal fishing is a 24 Billion dollar problem. Most commercial illegal fishing activity goes unreported and unaddressed. Ship tracking technology only cover 15% of the commercial fishing vessels, and these monitoring systems can be disabled.
Over this weekend, we developed a buoy system to detect, identify, and track vessels in no-take zones – areas where fishing is prohibited. We help enforcement agencies monitor large sensitive ocean zones. This system uses passive sonars and does not require participation from ships. The system can also verify fishing activities and provide information on areas that may be at risk for overfishing. This system can also help countries protect Exclusive Economic Zones from unidentified vessels.
